Traditional Shotokan Karate in Sunderland, UK

EKF Kyu Grade Championships

On January 22nd Dokan attended the English Kyu Grade Championships.

We took gold and silver in the under nines team kata. The gold team was made up of Eleisha Mitchinson, Rebecca Bradburn and Sadie Stoner.

We took another gold in the Boys 10 - 11 years kata thanks to Aidan Young.

The nine years and under team kumite took silver with Eleisha Mitchinson, Rebecca Bradburn and Simone Stewart who put in an outstanding performance. We would have won if not for the referee dismissing the judge who flagged for the jodan mawashi geri - a very dodgy decision.

We took two bronze in 6th kyu and below kata with Rachael Stephenson and Kaitlin Marshall. Kaitlin also fought fantastically well for her first attempt in a top flight competition.

Chloe Million took the bronze in kata nine years and under, and we won another bronze in the 10 - 13 years team kata.

We had eight individuals go out in the round before medals, some having won four or more bouts to get that far. Sadie stoner who was looking favourite to win her kata category was disqualified for repeating a kata and Brad Million was disqualified for breaking a lads nose...

With a tad more luck and/or better refereeing we could have won much more. This was the hardest competition that Dokan has ever attended with just under 500 competetors. Dokan looked excellent and Sensei Mitchinson was pleased with all of his team, especially in the kumite where they put in their best performance ever.

Actress Claire Skinner (Outnumbered, Dr. Who) has her photo taken with Dokan squad members.
She's such a nice lady - how could we refuse?
