Traditional Shotokan Karate in Sunderland, UK
We take our students' tuition very seriously. There are four fully qualified karate coaches at most lessons and we invite guest instructors to provide different areas of expertise.

Apart from normal karate activities we have twice yearly presentation nights with multitude of trophies to be awarded. At these social events there are raffles, games, prize draws, and an entertainer for the children. We also arrange theme park trips for our more regular students.

We run a very friendly club but command a certain level of respect. Students learn to conduct themselves correctly both in the club and at competitions.

Below is a list of our current clubs, arranged by venue. Please click on the appropriate club venue to see more information.

Karate is a relatively inexpensive activity and the costs can be broken down into a few simple categories.

Training Fees: £2.50 per session (£3.00 at Boldon Methodist Church).
The Tuesday classes at Bunnyhill and the Thursday and Friday classes at Redhouse have optional second sessions on advanced kata and kumite. If you attend both sessions then the combined cost for both sessions is £3.50, otherwise it is the standard £2.50 irrespective of which session you attend. Only students who attend more than one lesson a week are allowed to take advantage of this discounted rate.

Karate Suit: Depending on size a karate suit (jacket, trousers and belt) will cost anything from £12.00 to well over £100.00 (if you want a custom Japanese import!). Most people can get a good suit for under £20.00.

Other Equipment: Sparring mitts are a must once you have settled into your karate. You may also want to buy extra protection (such as groin guard) or spare belts of you decide to take part in karate competitons. Costs vary but, for example, a pair of hand mitts will cost about £10.00.

Karate Licence: All students require a licence for insurance purposes and as a record of their achievements. The initial licence costs £7.50, then it is renewable annually at £6.50. A passport photo is required. These can be done at the club for a cost of £1.

Gradings: Grading examinations are held every three months. When you are ready you will be invited to take a grading examination for your next belt. The cost varies depending on which belt you are taking (a black belt grading is more expensive than a beginner's) but they won't break the bank.

All in all, karate is a lot cheaper than playing Tennis or Football, but don't mistake low cost for low benefits. Many karate instructors are unpaid and teach for the love of the art, not to make a profit.
